Women’s Leadership in NGOs

Collaborative Research Programme Invitation

There remains a clear knowledge gap as to the unique challenges for women in leadership across the NGO sector. We need to inform that gap. With women’s empowerment core to strategy for many of us in the not-for-profit sector, it is essential that our organisations reflect these same values in the way we work.

We are inviting change makers (senior managers, HR and OD directors, organisational change leaders) from across the sector, to play an essential role in a collaborative research programme, informing both the sector and individual organisations as to how to ensure talented women progress as leaders and diversity is valued at the top.

The facilitators

Sarah Fraser and Katy Murray will facilitate the group. As experts and experienced facilitators in the NGO sector, we will provide a clear structure for the research process and build an atmosphere to enable powerful learning and shared insights. Our role is also to provide resources and cutting edge research to support the group’s inquiry process.

Your investment

We will invite you to ‘hostone of the meetings at your agency, to put the research into context.  The cost to participate in the research programme is £1,800 per person.

Beyond the financial investment, we also ask that all contributors commit to the research process. This means attending all group sessions and coming with a willingness and energy to participate fully.

Collaborative research is an exciting and rich process and this programme has the potential to bring about real change in your organisations and the wider NGO sector.

Interested in participating?

Feel free to contact us to explore your participation further, and to pass this invitation on to others who may wish to take part in the research process. Booking and registration closes 30th April 2014.

Why participate?

This unique programme will give you and your organisation an essential insight into your culture, talent development and what makes a difference for women with leadership potential to progress in your organisation. As well as experiencing in-depth group coaching as part of the process, your organisation will benefit from primary access to the following:

/span>research report data from across the sector on the opportunities and barriers for women progressing into leadership roles, and recommendations on how to address these

/span>benchmarking individual organisation benchmarking for contributors to inform your organisational learning and change

/span>expert coaching session - to help you in identifying next steps for your organisation

/span>individual agency action plan support and guidance to enable you to present clear recommendations for implementation

How does the process work?

/span>the process for this programme is action research. The focus is on learning through doing, then reflecting on these actions within a small community of expert peers

/span>contributors take part in 6 x monthly research group facilitated meetings

/span>as facilitators we will share current thinking, using cutting edge research around women in leadership and related diversity issues, as a springboard for the group’s collaborative inquiry

/span>in between meetings the group members apply their learning and knowledge, test out some assumptions, conduct experiments within their own organisations, exploring and addressing the issues raised

/span>the process provides a space for wise collective reflection, appreciative inquiry, and change that emerges as a result

/span>the collaborative research approach enables the contributors to practice and reflect on organisational change, rather than simply talk theoretically

Invitation

You are invited to contribute to the collaborative research programme, starting May 2014, and join us for a conference later in the year to present the research findings to the wider NGO community.

The precise topics for the research will be mapped and explored by the research group. They could include:

  1. /span>What enables women to lead, to get noticed and to progress in our organisations?

  2. /span>Does the concept of nd generation biasexist within our agencies and INGO culture?

  3. /span>Are there critical points at which women tend to leave the ‘talent pipelinein our organisations? What interventions can help?

  4. /span>What can we benchmark and learn from other sectors?

  5. /span>What is it possible to change short term quick wins, mid term and longer term?
